In light of the outcomes of their most recent friendly matches, former Nigerian professional football striker and former head coach of the national team, Samson Siasia, has declared that the Super Eagles would not win the upcoming 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Siasia stresses that the players must improve if they want to have a chance to compete for the championship in the 2023 AFCON competition.
The Super Eagles’ most recent games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe have not been particularly outstanding, according to Naija News. Patriotic residents are alarmed by the event, since the Nigerian squad is aiming for a fourth championship in Cote d’Ivoire.
Siasia, who was a part of the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia, is adamant that if the team wants to have a big effect at the next AFCON, both the players and the technical staff need to improve.
“Like other Nigerians, I’m concerned about the Eagles’ dismal recent performances. In an interview with Channels Television, the former striker said, “Struggling against nations like Lesotho and Zimbabwe is not a good sign of a team ready to win the Africa Cup of Nations as well as qualify for the 2026 World Cup.”
“Let’s not fool ourselves; with this disjointed team, we cannot be the best in Africa. In his remarks regarding Jose Peseiro’s squad, Siasia continued, “Our players must be taught what it means to wear the green and white jersey of the nation while the coach also needs to improve on the tactical approach.”
According to Naija News, the Super Eagles will play their first game of the 2023 AFCON on January 14 at the Alhassan Quattara Stadium in Ebimpe against Equatorial Guinea.
On January 18 and 22, respectively, they will play Guinea-Bissau, the hosts, and Cote d’Ivoire.
