Liverpool will not participate in the newly expanded 32-team Club World Cup tournament starting in 2025. FIFA’s criteria for qualification allows only two clubs per country to participate, meaning Liverpool’s next chance to feature in the tournament would not be until 2029. Despite calls for greater player welfare, FIFA continues to add games to the calendar, causing concerns over fixture congestion and player demands. While Liverpool would miss out on a financial windfall, the club may benefit from not participating in the tournament. The Club World Cup is currently an annual affair, but the new tournament will take place every four years during the summer months.
