The New England Patriots’ main issue remains finding a quarterback, even with Jerod Mayo replacing Bill Belichick as head coach. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggests that Mayo’s rebuild will require both a veteran and a draft pick to address the quarterback position. The Patriots are among the teams considered as potential sleepers to sign Russell Wilson if the Denver Broncos release him due to a dispute over an injury guarantee in his contract. David Carr of NFL.com thinks Wilson could be a bridge quarterback for the Patriots on a short-term basis. Mayo could benefit from Wilson’s experience and Super Bowl-winning credentials, with the keys to unleashing his talents being play-action passing and moving pockets. The Patriots have enough cap room to afford Wilson and could also improve the talent around him by partnering him with veteran wideout Kendrick Bourne and record-breaking rookie slot receiver DeMario Douglas. While drafting a franchise QB seems like the obvious move, the Patriots’ strong defense and competent running game make them well-suited for a veteran signal-caller like Wilson.
