Initially, it was unclear whether drafting Tyquan Thornton in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft was a mistake for the New England Patriots. Despite being an unexpected choice, it was premature to label him a bust without giving him a chance to prove himself on the field. However, after two years, it is evident that the Patriots made another poor selection for a critical offensive position.
Thornton has not made much of an impact in a Patriots uniform, with his rookie season starting late due to injury. He recorded 22 receptions for 247 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games, leaving much room for improvement. Unfortunately, he failed to progress in his second season and was hardly visible on a team desperate for offensive talent. He only managed 13 receptions for 91 yards and no touchdowns in nine games, with injury troubles once again plaguing him.
Despite being a fast runner, Thornton struggles with running crisp routes and getting open, which limits his effectiveness on the field. His biggest play of the season was an end-around run, not a pass play. To make matters worse, three receivers were drafted consecutively after Thornton, leaving the Patriots with missed opportunities.
In conclusion, the Patriots’ decision to draft Thornton has not paid off, and it is clear that they need to improve their selection process for offensive positions.
