After three seasons as assistant defensive backs coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 39-year-old coach has decided to join the Las Vegas Raiders as their safeties coach. Although he interviewed for a position on the New England Patriots’ staff, he ultimately chose to move to Las Vegas instead.
There were reportedly five coaches, including the coach in question, who were being considered for the defensive coordinator position in New England. However, the Patriots are also considering in-house candidate DeMarcus Covington, as well as coaches from the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and Denver Broncos.
Covington is said to be the favorite for the DC position, which has been vacant since 2017. With new head coach Jerod Mayo taking over from Bill Belichick, it’s expected that coordinator titles will return.
Despite interviewing with the Patriots, the coach in question is now the third coach to join another team. Two coaches who were in play for the offensive coordinator position also chose to go in a different direction. The Patriots have conducted 12 reported interviews in their search for new coordinators.
