The hiring of Smith has resolved one of the biggest uncertainties regarding the Steelers’ offense. The attention now shifts to a potential quarterback battle involving Kenny Pickett and a group of unknown challengers, which may include Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill had a successful stint under Smith’s tutelage as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator from 2019-2020, throwing 55 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Smith’s run-heavy offense, centered around Derrick Henry, opened up the passing game for Tannehill and revitalized his career. Tannehill led the Titans to the AFC Championship game in 2019 and earned Comeback Player of the Year honors. In Pittsburgh, the backup QB situation is uncertain, with Mitch Trubisky’s experiment failing and Mason Rudolph’s free agency looming. While Tannehill may not be a long-term solution, his proven track record with Smith’s schemes and a strong running game could provide enough support for Pickett. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin plans on starting Pickett in 2024 but intends to bring in competition, including Tannehill and a late-round QB draft pick.
