During the regular season, the Browns had the highest number of turnovers in the league, with 37 giveaways. They lost the turnover battle in 11 games and had a takeaway/giveaway differential of minus-9. The Bills were not far behind with 28 turnovers for the year, and early turnovers led to the departure of offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey mid-season. The Bills had 18 total turnovers after 10 games, and Josh Allen had thrown the most interceptions in the league, with 11, at the time Dorsey was let go. The Browns’ new offensive coordinator, Dorsey, has made correcting turnovers a top priority, as it was a problem during his time in Buffalo and Cleveland. However, Cleveland’s high turnover numbers were partially due to having to start five different quarterbacks throughout the season, and 19 of their 23 interceptions came from backup quarterbacks. Dorsey is confident in quarterback Deshaun Watson’s ability to protect the football and make big plays, but it will be a delicate balance between risk-taking and ball security. The offseason emphasis on correcting turnovers is a start, but only time will tell if it has been successful.
