On 2/6/24, Dave Canales became the head coach for the Carolina Panthers in the NFL, marking his first time in the position. He was hired after serving as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for one season. Canales’ quick rise from quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks to head coach in just two years was unexpected, especially given the challenging situation he faced with the Buccaneers. However, he successfully led the team to overachieve, winning the NFC South for the third consecutive season and earning Baker Mayfield his first Pro Bowl nomination.
Now, Canales’ goal is to change the culture in Carolina and turn the struggling 2-15 team around. He plans to build off the team’s strengths, particularly the continuity on the defensive side and the talent at the tackle spots and with Bryce Young on offense. Canales is excited to tap into the success the Panthers have seen over the years and lead the team to relevance once again.
