After their loss in Super Bowl LVIII, the 49ers made a mistake by firing Steve Wilks, the defensive coordinator who actually performed well in the game, except for the final drive of overtime when the defense was understandably tired. It was not Wilks’ fault, yet he was fired instead of special teams coordinator Brian Schneider. In reality, the special teams were to blame for the loss, not the defense. The defense did not give up a touchdown drive during regulation, except for the one that came after the 49ers muffed a punt deep in their own territory. This mistake was due to Schneider’s lack of coaching, as Ray Ray McCloud tried to run with the ball instead of falling on it. Additionally, the kicker Schneider recommended, Jake Moody, missed an extra point that allowed the Chiefs to tie the game. The special teams were terrible in the Super Bowl, and Schneider should be held accountable for their poor performance.
