Following mixed results from the 49ers defense, Wilks was fired in February after just one season in his position, just days after the Super Bowl. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers have completed two interviews for their defensive coordinator vacancy. Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that they have interviewed Los Angeles Chargers former head coach Brandon Staley and 49ers defensive pass game specialist Nick Sorensen. Staley was fired in December after leading the Chargers from 2021 to 2023 and Sorensen has been with the 49ers since 2022, working his way up from defensive assistant to pass game coordinator. Although the 49ers gave up just 17.5 points per game this past season, they struggled in the playoffs on the defensive side. As Shanahan searches for the right defensive coordinator to take them all the way next year, Daniel Bullocks, the 49ers’ defensive back’s coach, is expected to interview for the role later in the week. As per NFL rules, teams are required to interview at least two minority candidates for all coordinator positions, so more updates are awaited.
