Now, Poles has the opportunity to acquire Burns after all. It is possible that he may target Burns again during free agency. While Carolina is expected to use their franchise tag on Burns, if they do not, the Bears could be in a strong position to sign the 25-year-old.
When considering whether or not Brian Burns would be a good fit for the Bears, the most crucial factor to consider is money. Chicago has a significant amount of money available for free agents, with a total of $82 million. However, Burns may still demand a high salary, with reports suggesting he was looking for a contract worth $30 million. This could potentially be a barrier in contract negotiations between Burns and Carolina which led to a pause.
It is undeniable that Burns is an exceptional athlete, excelling as an edge rusher and possessing a strong potential partnership with Montez Sweat. Nevertheless, a $30 million deal may be excessive for Burns considering his performance in the last season. While not terrible, it was certainly not his most impressive year in the league.
Despite his age and overall health, Burns has not suffered any major injuries. With this in mind, he is fully capable of having a rebound season in 2024.
If Burns were open to accepting a contract for less than $30 million, he would make a valuable addition to the Bears’ roster.
