The New England Patriots are set to trade former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round pick, as confirmed by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. The Jaguars were the only team to make an offer for Jones, and the deal will be finalized once the new league year begins on Wednesday.
Jones, who was drafted by the Patriots in the first round in 2021, will be returning to his hometown of Jacksonville. He is expected to serve as the backup to Trevor Lawrence for the Jaguars. Jones had a strong start to his rookie season in New England, setting a record for completion percentage by a debut rookie and finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting. However, he struggled in the following two seasons, leading to a loss of his starting role.
During his time at Alabama, Jones displayed excellent passing skills and set a single-season completion percentage record. He took over as the starting quarterback in 2020 and led the Crimson Tide to an undefeated season and a national championship under coach Nick Saban.
