There is more insight regarding why Mac Jones didn’t get a fresh start under new head coach Jerod Mayo before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars once the new league year starts. The quarterback’s time in the New England Patriots’ locker room was described as toxic, with reports of his behavior causing issues. Despite being pulled from games by former coach Bill Belichick multiple times last season and not playing in the final six games, Mayo hinted at giving Jones a chance to compete for the starting position if the team drafts a rookie quarterback. Ultimately, the Patriots informed Jones of their trade plans after the combine and settled on Jacksonville as the destination. Although the return for Jones isn’t ideal for a former first-round pick, he now has the opportunity to restart his career as a backup for the Jaguars.
Jones, who didn’t have a great experience with the Patriots, is now getting a fresh start as a backup to Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. However, there’s still a chance for him to revive his career if an opportunity arises due to injuries either with the Jaguars or another team later this year.
