The Patriots will only choose a quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the draft if they are convinced he can be a franchise player. However, regardless of their draft decision, they always needed a contingency plan in case the rookie isn’t ready or is injured. Therefore, signing Jacoby Brissett to a one-year, $8 million deal was a logical move by the Patriots. Even if a rookie is selected early in the draft and expected to start, having Brissett as an experienced backup is a wise move for New England.
