The Ottawa Senators managed to secure an unlikely win in a hockey game by rallying back to tie the score after trailing 1-0 and then falling behind 2-0 early in the final period. They eventually won 3-2 in a shootout, with Claude Giroux scoring the deciding goal. Despite being outshot 20-8 in the third period, Ottawa goalie Anton Forsberg played a key role in keeping the team in the game. Forsberg credited his belief in the team’s character for the comeback. Senators’ coach Jacques Martin praised Forsberg’s performance, noting that he got stronger as the game progressed. Boone Jenner gave the Blue Jackets an early 1-0 lead, but the Senators stayed resilient and continued to play hard, ultimately seizing victory. Despite several missed opportunities, the Senators kept pushing and capitalized on their chances to secure the win.
Giroux mentioned that the rough ice conditions in the shootout prompted him to attempt a slapshot. He explained that it was harder to deke due to the choppy ice after the third period and overtime.
During the game, Ottawa’s fourth line applied significant pressure in the Columbus zone, with Kastelic showing frustration after a close call. Forsberg made a key save off a spin-o-rama attempt by Columbus’ Meyer and later made a spectacular save to deny Texier. The final shot count was tied at 37.
Columbus, ranked as the NHL’s fourth-worst team before the game, was two points behind Ottawa in the standings. Gaudreau, who previously had a standout season with the Flames, has struggled since joining the Blue Jackets with 47 points in 66 games. Ottawa had split their two previous games against Columbus.
In their upcoming game, Ottawa will face the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon.
