Jayden Daniels is the better quarterback prospect than Drake Maye following Caleb Williams.
However, ESPN commentator and former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck does not seem to see it that way.
Hasselbeck stated on WEEI’s “Gresh and Fauria” show on Thursday, “(I’ve) been at ESPN for 15 years evaluating quarterbacks as they come out for the draft,” as Mike Kadlick recorded. “Maye is, in my opinion, the best potential I have assessed thus far. Thus, based on his performance against players like Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan during that time, I believe Andrew Luck to be a very promising potential.
That is quite high praise indeed from Hasselbeck..
It is easy to understand why he holds those beliefs. With an NFL-ready frame at 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds, along with exceptional arm strength, Maye has a lot of potential. He has the vibe of a prototype Josh Allen.
But Maye’s deft use of the finer parts of his game, such as his footwork, has been exposed, which has somewhat hurt his draft stock.
If Williams and Daniels go before him, that might put him available to the Patriots at No. 3 overall. And Hasselbeck is adamant that the Patriots would hit a grand slam rather than just a home run with this selection.
Hasselbeck remarked, “I think there is almost nothing to not like about Drake Maye when people go through the process with him.” Given his size, you might be able to be extremely particular and tell him, “Hey, I’d like his delivery to be a little more compact.” Yes, you could say that without a doubt. I believe that after seeing him, he will be a better professional than a college player because of his physical, mental, and athletic attributes going to be on par with the best.
Then, in my opinion, you’ll be able to mentally put a lot of pressure on him to be able to dominate the game in the same manner that elite quarterbacks do. Like, I believe he can understand it. For those reasons, I believe he is the best potential in this group and among the top players I have seen in the previous 15 years.
