For the most of the new century, the Buffalo Bills were insignificant. Buffalo was in deep despair as Tom Brady, the New England Patriots, and the other teams in the league would consistently shame them. But when they appointed Sean McDermott as head coach in 2017, making him the 19th head coach in franchise history, it all changed.
With his hiring and the addition of quarterback Josh Allen, the Bills have consistently developed into an AFC powerhouse and a Super Bowl contender. The Bills have not yet participated in the season finale, despite the high expectations that have been put on them. To be honest, the Bills haven’t lived up to expectations in the last few
This is Buffalo’s greatest season since the squads of the early 1990s under McDermott. Under McDermott’s leadership, the Bills have won the AFC East four times in a row with a 73-41 record, or a 64% win percentage. But his postseason record tells a different tale.
The 50-year-old coach’s postseason record is 5-6 with a 45% victory rate. Year after year, the Bills have had the greatest odds to win the Lombardi Trophy. Under McDermott, the closest they have gone to a Super Bowl was in 2020, when they lost to the Chiefs in the AFC title game. They have since suffered three consecutive divisional round losses, two of which came at the hands of the Chiefs.
By the Bills’ standards, they’ve been great, but by the media’s standards, they haven’t been good enough. Quarterback Josh Allen is great; there’s no denying that, along with the team; however, they should be able to do more. There’s talk about their Super Bowl window closing or being closed. That will only be dedicated by the front office, McDermott, and Allen. They’ll remain among the top in the AFC as long as McDermott and Allen are together. The next step on the list is to bring a Super Bowl to Western New York.
