Prior to free agency, the Buffalo Bills made significant personnel adjustments. The Bills quickly released six veterans as they were $43.3 million over the $255.4 million cap heading into the offseason.
Tre’Davious White, an All-Pro cornerback, was one of the hardest to say goodbye to. White was under contract through 2025 when he inked a four-year, $69 million extension in 2020. But White’s 2022 NFL season was cut short by an ACL tear, and in Week 4, he tore his Achilles.
At the NFL’s annual meeting on March 24, general manager of the Bills Brandon Beane disclosed that White’s return was still possible. But the Bills’ 2017 NFL draft first-round selection is no longer with them.
“White intends to sign a one-year, $8.5 million deal with a max value up to $10 million with the Los Angeles Rams, per sources,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on Tuesday, March 26.
Although White attracted interest from a number of teams during his free agency, it appears the Rams had the upper hand when the veteran was still recovering. “A relationship: Tre’Davious White’s Achilles was repaired by Rams team physician Neal ElAttrache, and the two spent time together recovering after surgery,” Schefter wrote.
Just the day before, Bills head coach Sean McDermott broke down in front of reporters when discussing White’s sudden dismissal. “I find it tragic in some ways because of the injuries, and who knows where he and we would have ended up in Buffalo if the injuries hadn’t happened.” stated McDermott.
“I firmly believe that he is among the best defensive backs to have ever played in Buffalo.”
