The Buffalo Bills had a successful ground game in 2023 thanks to James Cook, the first running back to surpass 1,000 yards since LeSean McCoy. The team is looking to enhance their roster through the NFL Draft, with one expert suggesting they may pick a tough running back who excelled in the SEC last season. ESPN’s Matt Miller projected the Bills selecting Missouri’s Cody Schrader in the fifth round to bring a power running element that the team currently lacks.
With key losses in their backfield, including Latavius Murray, Leonard Fournette, Damien Harris, and Nyheim Hines, the Bills are seeking to bolster their running game. Schrader, described as a determined running back with impressive stats, could offer the team more depth and versatility. According to NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, Schrader’s skills in short-yardage and pass protection could complement Cook’s strengths on the team.
Schrader has the potential to be a valuable RB2/3 with his ability to play in all three downs. His presence could also help ease the burden on quarterback Josh Allen, who often had to take on running duties in short-yardage situations last season. General manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott are focused on reducing the number of hits Allen takes during games. The Bills have also re-signed veteran running back Ty Johnson, who showed promise after earning a promotion from the practice squad following injuries to other players. Johnson’s role grew throughout the season and he made important contributions in the playoffs, including a touchdown.
