With three weeks left in the regular season, the Toronto Maple Leafs are unlikely to move up in the Atlantic Division standings. It’s probable that they will finish in third place and start the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on the road against either the Florida Panthers or the Boston Bruins, depending on which team loses the race for the top spot. The Bruins currently hold a two-point lead over the Panthers after a 4-3 comeback win in Florida, but the Panthers have a game in hand on the Bruins. Both potential matchups bring back bad memories for Maple Leafs fans. The Panthers dominated the Leafs in the playoffs last season, and the Bruins have a history of winning against them in critical games. Despite the Leafs’ strong performance after the All-Star break and their improved defense, they will face significant challenges in either first-round matchup. The Panthers physically dominated the Leafs and eliminated them in five games last May. While the Leafs may be more prepared to face the Panthers this time, the Panthers have a better defensive game and goaltending. On the other hand, the Bruins still possess a wealth of playoff experience and a strong defensive game, despite missing key players from previous seasons. The Leafs might find it easier to overcome the Bruins, but they are limited to being interested spectators for now.
