The 49ers from San Francisco must be thinking what else they have to do to take home the Lombardi Trophy, the ultimate goal.
With no obvious flaws on the roster—aside from the offensive line’s right side, which may be a little below average in pass protection—the 49ers will have to scratch their heads to find out how to stop Patrick Mahomes.
Currently holding three Super Bowl trophies, Kyle Shanahan has won two as the Niners’ head coach and the final one as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons during their historic 25-point collapse against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. More surprisingly, he has given up double-digit leads in all three of them and has gone into overtime in two of them, the only two times in NFL history.
Soon after the postseason ended, Shanahan fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, whose second half gameplan modifications drew harsh criticism. In his place, the team promoted Nick Sorensen, a former defensive passing game expert, from within.
As highlights from an 11-man haul, the 49ers also added key players to their defensive line, including double-digit sack artist Leonard Floyd and former Green Bay Packers All Pro DeVondre Campbell.
On offence, though, San Francisco has been far more cautious, even with 2023 All-Pro receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s future still up in the air. Aiyuk’s agent strongly refuted reports that he had asked for a trade on Sunday.
But now that former Niner Trent Taylor, also known as “Quality Time” (unbeknownst to me), has returned as a free agent, the Niners have finally added a skill player to their roster. According to Jordan Schultz. We are currently in the dog days of football free agency; we are counting down the days until the NFL Draft’s glory, followed by rookie minicamp and OTAs, and then there is a summer emptiness. However, the nice weather is at least here.
Currently, in the football cycle, the amount of splash wideout free agents not named Odell Beckham Jr or Tyler Boyd available is fairly limited, and the types of players that are left are often role players or return specialists.
