The Carolina Panthers couldn’t resist joining the craziness of Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, and fans were delighted when they moved up to pick wide receiver Xavier Legette at No. 32. This move was made to potentially secure his fifth-year option in the future, aligning with the new general manager’s forward-thinking approach. On Day 2, Carolina wasted no time getting in on the action with the No. 39 overall pick, acquired through the controversial decision to trade Brian Burns due to strained relations between player and team.
Everybody is aware of the missed opportunity Carolina had with Burns, but Morgan couldn’t dwell on it. His focus was on making the most of the New York Giants’ pick to improve the Panthers’ future. Despite the temptation to trade the pick, he ultimately decided to stay put and even moved up in the draft after some trading back and forth.
After careful consideration, the Panthers ultimately chose Jonathon Brooks, a talented running back who appears well-suited to fit in with the team’s new direction under Morgan and head coach Dave Canales. Transitioning may not be simple, but Brooks brings experience and professionalism that should seamlessly integrate him into the locker room.
Brooks brings a spirited and passionate playing style that has caught the eye of team officials. Morgan has emphasized a desire for players with a strong work ethic, and Brooks appears to embody those qualities.
His presence on the field will offer Bryce Young a valuable option in the backfield. Brooks excels in maintaining balance after contact, possesses excellent field awareness, and has the ability to break away for significant gains. While there are concerns about a previous ACL injury, the team felt it was a calculated risk within Canales’ well-rounded offensive strategy.
Many may be pleasantly surprised by the success of Carolina’s early draft picks under Morgan’s leadership. With hard work ahead, it is clear that the team’s front office has a certain type of player in mind, and Brooks has earned their confidence for now.
The true test will come during practice and in actual games, challenges that both Brooks and Legette are prepared to meet enthusiastically.
