A new team has signed one of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ most dependable and consistent players in recent memory.
Longtime Jaguars defensive tackle Dawuane Smoot has signed with the Buffalo Bills. This is the first time in Smoot’s career that he has not been a member of the Jaguars’ roster.Playing in 99 regular season games and five playoff games for the Jaguars over the past seven years, Smoot has amassed 27 tackles for loss, 64 quarterback hits, five forced fumbles, and 23.5 sacks, which is sixth all-time in team history.
Smoot, a third-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, spent his first six seasons with the Jaguars, playing in 90 games and racking up 22.5 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles. Smoot, one of the best development stories in recent Jaguars history, moved to more of an inside/outside role in which he lined up in several locations, which allowed him to become one of the Jaguars’ most dependable pass-rushers in recent seasons.
Smoot led the team in pressures, was fourth in quarterback hits, led in sacks, and was second in pass-rush win percentage when he suffered an Achilles injury in Week 16 of 2022 against the New York Jets. Smoot recorded at least five sacks in every season between 2019 and 2022, totaling 22.5. sacks in that span and often looking like Jacksonville’s most consistent pass-rusher.
Following his recovery from an Achilles injury, Smoot played in 12 games for the Jaguars in 2023. He concluded his playing career in Jacksonville with 10 tackles, 1 sack, and 4 quarterback hits.
