The Philadelphia 76ers will start over in an attempt to retrace their mistakes and launch a more competitive title campaign the next season after suffering another heartbreaking and early playoff elimination this season.
Thankfully, the front office will have everything they need to upgrade the roster this summer. The 76ers will have an abundance of appealing chips of their own from their glut of cap space and tradable assets, which they can use to acquire a star off the market or, should they so choose, execute a trade for a top starter.
In addition to their vast array of financial assets, many people overlook the fact that Philadelphia has a draft pick this season. The 76ers are currently projected to select 16th in the 2018 rookie selection, giving them a good chance to add a player who might be a major player for the foreseeable future.
Not so quickly. The 76ers are actually generally expected to trade their own first-round pick this year in order to entice a star and sweeten the pot for what would be a blockbuster transaction, according to Andrew Peters of Bleacher Report.
Generally speaking, hoarding draft picks is a hazardous move, but the 76ers are in no position to wait around and take a chance on a potential project piece. First off, head coach Nick Nurse isn’t exactly known for turning young players into tenable cogs, and the 2024 cop of rookies isn’t exactly a talented group.
The Philadelphia 76ers must ultimately take advantage of their special circumstance this summer as a win-now club with a king-sized cap space to fully commit. Ultimately, there are better years to fulfil their desire to add more youth to their squad.
