The Buffalo Bills have made changes to their wide receiver group this offseason, including releasing Quintez Cephus only a short time after signing him. Cephus had been serving a suspension for gambling violations, prompting some criticism from fans. In place of Cephus, the Bills added veteran safety Dee Delaney, who is expected to compete for a roster spot in the upcoming season.
Cephus was one of three Lions players reprimanded for gambling, as reported by The Associated Press. He received the harshest punishment—an indefinite suspension—which lasted the full season until he was allowed to return this offseason. With the departure of Gabe Davis in free agency and the trade of Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans, the Bills had to restructure their wide receiving corps, for which they had already completed some work.
Wide receiver Keon Coleman of Florida State was selected by the team with its first draft pick, which came with the first pick of the second round. Sam Monson, an analyst for Pro Football Focus, pointed out that Coleman has certain physical strengths as well as some warning signs, indicating that he might not be prepared to fill the vacuum created by Diggs’ departure.
“A three-star prospect, he received ten football offers (along with multiple basketball offers) but decided to walk on at Ohio State, his ideal school,” Brugler wrote. “Over the course of the last five seasons, he earned a spot on special teams and finished his career with an impressive 899 snaps and 14 tackles.”
