Many in the media have quickly dismissed former Alabama QB Bryce Young after a challenging rookie NFL season that differed from his success in college. Critics label him a bust, citing his struggles on film in his first year. However, a closer examination reveals that despite his initial setbacks, there are still reasons for hope. Analysts like Destin Adams point out various factors in Young’s situation, including the decision to select him over C.J. Stroud and the draft capital invested in him. While he may not have lived up to expectations initially, there is potential for improvement in the future.
James Foster from A to Z Sports Film Room gave Bryce Young a grade of D. In comparing him to C.J. Stroud, Foster believes Young fell short. Despite Young’s potential to become a good quarterback, limitations in arm talent may be hindering his progress. Foster points out Young’s struggles in certain games toward the end of the season and acknowledges the challenges he faced with a weak supporting cast. While Foster understands the potential risks of attributing Young’s performance to his surroundings, he deems a grade of D as fair due to the disappointing season but sees glimmers of hope for Young’s future.
Adams said, “Dave Canales, the Panthers’ new head coach, made the most of Baker Mayfield during his time as the OC in Tampa last year. “I don’t think it’s a direct comparison, but I do believe that both Mayfield and Young are somewhat smaller for the quarterback position. Although I believe Baker has demonstrated a little bit more arm strength than Bryce Young has likely displayed, I am eager to watch Dave Canales collaborate with Bryce in the upcoming season.”
Throughout his first campaign, Bryce’s accuracy, judgement, and football knowledge did not abruptly vanish. Did he appear diminutive? Indeed. Was there electricity in his arm? No.
However, we were aware that he brought those shortcomings from Alabama with him. The incapacity to break free from his line and the absence of protection from his pass catchers just emphasized those flaws.
So with a WR room that saw a proven veteran acquired via Diontae Johnson, and an explosive rookie in Xavier Legette drafted, there is a chance that the people writing off Young will be eating their words as soon as October.
