Before the Bills hit the field for the September season opener, the ongoing debate about whether the team’s wide receiver room is a major weakness or if it’s blown out of proportion will persist. Similar questions arose when Tyreek Hill was traded from Kansas City, and the Chiefs answered them impressively. Now, the question is whether Josh Allen and the Bills can do the same in 2024. Should they be content with their current roster or consider adding new faces? Wade Phillips, former Bills head coach, expressed his admiration for UFL Offensive Player of the Year Hakeem Butler after watching him shine for the St. Louis Battlehawks. Phillips believes Butler deserves a shot in the NFL and plans to recommend him to contacts in the league. Butler’s stellar performance in the UFL, leading in various statistics, has earned him praise from Phillips.
Butler is 28 years old, 5’5″, and 227 pounds in weight. The Arizona Cardinals selected him as the first overall choice in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was chosen with the 103rd overall choice in the fourth round. He has only been targeted once in his career and has only participated in two NFL games. Should NFL teams give him another chance after seeing this? He is the kind of receiver that the Bills and Brandon Beane have been concentrating on this offseason. Of the 12 receivers Buffalo presently has on the roster, only six will probably make the 53-man roster. Although Butler would have a steep learning curve, there is little danger in at least evaluating what he could bring to the Bills for a small contract.
