The last time Cam Newton played for the Carolina Panthers happened in 2021.
He returned after a time in New England playing with the Patriots.
It was to be a homecoming done full circle. Instead, there was simply more defeat. Since then, Newton has left the league.
Newton has since made passing references to playing football again. But at 35, he’s now starting to accept the likelihood that he won’t play in the NFL for a while.
Do I believe I’ll ever be able to play football again? In a podcast broadcast released on Wednesday, Newton stated, “Respectfully, no.” That’s just my honest opinion. It has been a very long time. It doesn’t get any younger. Can I play, in my opinion? Indeed. Do I believe I’m going to to play? I need somebody to take a chance. I don’t think somebody is gonna take that chance now.”
Midway through the 2021 season, Newton made his final effort at a comeback while playing with the Panthers. In all, he scored nine touchdowns, had 230 rushing yards, and 684 passing yards.
Newton has had a very divisive career. His pinnacles were winning MVP in 2015 and taking the Panthers to the Super Bowl. The lows, during the next several seasons, were, nevertheless, far lower than anticipated.
Nevertheless, he will always be remembered as the best quarterback in Panthers history.
But understanding when to give up is a necessary component of greatness. Newton is also aware of how unlikely it is that he will ever play in the NFL again.
Newton remarked, “I haven’t played football in four years.” “Do I believe that someone will now take a chance on me? No. that’s me being honest..
