The beginning offensive tackle allowed numerous sacks, which made life more challenging for quarterback Bryce Young. Consequently, Pro Football Focus identified Ekwonu as one of the 10 players with much to demonstrate in the upcoming 2024 season. According to Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus, Ekwonu’s performance hasn’t been as poor as Evan Neal’s, who was drafted right after him in 2022. Ekwonu’s pass-blocking grades have been average over the past two seasons, but his run-blocking saw improvement in the previous year. With a make-or-break third season ahead, Ekwonu’s future with Carolina remains uncertain, although a stronger offense could lead to better outcomes for the tackle.
Ekwonu acknowledged that he fell short of his potential in the previous season, calling it a humbling experience in late May. Recognizing the upcoming season as crucial, he understands the need to perform well for the Panthers offense to improve by late summer. Despite a challenging year, Ekwonu is grateful for the support of his teammates who remind him that a bad game doesn’t define his abilities. Looking ahead to a comeback season, he is determined to establish himself as the top tackle on the team.
