Charlotte City Council is scheduled to vote on a proposed renovation plan for Bank of America Stadium on Monday. This plan necessitates $650 million in public funding. The stadium, home to the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC, has received limited improvements since its construction. While Tepper Sports and Entertainment is requesting significant public funds for the renovations, the team’s recent virtual renderings have garnered considerable support among a large portion of the fanbase. However, the request for substantial public assistance from the NFL’s second-wealthiest owner, David Tepper, has drawn criticism from both fans and city residents. Adding complexity to the situation, TSE and the city are anticipated to initiate negotiations for a new stadium in 2037, as reported by WFAE’s Steve Harrison. A city representative has informed The Athletic’s Joe Person that the construction of a new stadium by 2046 is not guaranteed, but rather signifies an agreement to commence discussions regarding a potential new stadium. Despite the evident need for renovations at Bank of America Stadium, the prospect of the city investing $650 million in a stadium that may be replaced in the future, necessitating further public funding, could potentially face opposition from Charlotte residents.
