Bryce Young, the quarterback in his second year, isn’t totally out of the dark.
Head coach Dave Canales was brought in, Young’s confidence was restored, and he was deemed the Panthers’ best building block going into the 2024 campaign. All of these things happened during the offseason.
When David Kenyon of Bleacher Reports compiled a list of the top young players for each of the 32 teams, Young undoubtedly made it.
“You know, he had a terrible rookie year. “I’m not disputing that,” writes Kenyon. But there are plenty of reasons why Bryce Young was selected first overall; also, a new coaching staff and a stronger receiving group have made things more promising in 2024. Though it’s far too early to give up on Young, he must be much better this season.”
Clearly, the Panthers aren’t, as they are focusing more on Xavier Legette and Diontae Johnson as targets for Young to throw to.
Canales recently showered admiration on Young for being a capable leader when given the right resources.
When speaking of Young, Canales stated, “I’m just excited about the talent,” on the podcast The Season with Peter Schrager last week. “Everything we observed from above a year ago when we were doing the draft evaluation. It’s all there. It’s all still there. So it’s like, wait, the guy’s athletic. He can get the ball out quickly.
He is an executive. He has good communication skills. As if he had everything we could possibly need. Now, Bryce, just do your one-eleventh, quarterback bit; after all, you’re the point guard. Then, we’ll take care of the rest, and we can eliminate the pressure of “you’ve got lead, you’ve got to do this” and similar statements. You are the one. No, that isn’t accurate at all. I haven’t witnessed that football winning model in action. We didn’t put everything on Russell Wilson’s plate in Seattle. Therefore, we won’t attempt to establish that model in Carolina.”
Carolina is aware that Young will determine its future. He needs to live up to the expectations now.
