In the latest episode of Hard Knocks on HBO, viewers got to see the final trade talks between Joe Schoen, the General Manager of the New York Giants, and Dan Morgan, the General Manager of the Carolina Panthers. Morgan took his time considering the deal and consulted with owner David Tepper before getting back to Schoen several hours later. Schoen shared his confusion about the negotiations, mentioning that he offered pick number 39, but Morgan rejected it. Schoen then proposed pick 47 and a pick from 2025 if Morgan wanted an additional pick.
The Panthers acquired the 39th overall pick and a fifth-round selection in 2025 by trading Burns and agreeing to swap fifth-round picks in 2024. Morgan wanted more, but Schoen was firm and didn’t give in. In the negotiation, Morgan questioned the need to include a seventh-round pick, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good relations and the need for players at his end of the deal. He suggested sticking to their previous agreement, where they had already compromised on some of Schoen’s requests.
