Teams are in a tight spot if they want to make any last-minute roster additions or modifications with less than a month until the NFL’s 2024 regular season starts. With the addition of two significant defensive line additions in the previous few days, the NFC South rival Falcons are currently the most aggressive club in the league. They signed Justin Simmons, the best free agency defensive back left on the market, after first trading for Patriots Pro Bowl edge rusher Matt Judon.
The Panthers will need to make a few moves of their own if they are to stay up with the squad that is favoured to win the division this season. One such chance is already in town. Back at the beginning of April, the Eagles traded edge rusher Haason Reddick to the Jets. It seems nobody bothered to ask Reddick if he wanted to go, because now he’s requested to get traded again.
The Jets are in Charlotte ahead of tomorrow night’s preseason game, having completed yesterday’s joint practice. This gives the Panthers a good opportunity to try to land one of the league’s most undervalued edge rushers.
Reddick wasn’t particularly good when he started out for the Cardinals as an inside linebacker. But when he moved outside to the edge in his fourth season, he took off, recording 12.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits. That was sufficient to land him a one-year contract with the Panthers, and he added another productive season to that in 2021, finishing with 11 sacks and 18 quarterback hits for the Green Bay Packers. But because the Panthers lacked the space, he went for the Eagles the next season.according to Over the Cap. That’s not enough to add Reddick, who has a base salary of $14.25 million in this the last year on his current contract. However, if Carolina could get the Jets to pay a large portion of that deal it’d be worth cutting another player or two to make room for Reddick.
Jadeveon Clowney is the team’s sole established outside pass rusher at the moment, so Reddick is perhaps the best addition they can make before the season starts. Time is running out.
