The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up their second preseason game of the season on Thursday, with the team observing several positive traits throughout the game.
The play of the Patriots’ rookie quarterback, Drake Maye, was one of the team’s biggest highlights against the Eagles. The third overall pick saw play in two quarters against Philadelphia, making the most of his restricted snap count in New England’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers.
Maye had a strong performance in the end, finishing with 47 throwing yards on six of his eleven attempts. In the second quarter, he also scored his first NFL touchdown on a rush into the red zone. Even if the game didn’t end the way New England had intended, there is a great deal of optimism to be gained from this one.
Following the Patriots’ 13–14 victory in Foxboro on Thursday, Maye discussed his thoughts on his experience from the team’s second preseason game. He said that while the squad put forth a strong effort, there were a few operational problems that needed to be resolved going ahead.
The Patriots’ performance wasn’t flawless; there were numerous blunders and misunderstandings on the offensive line, along with a few quarterback-to-receiver hookups that didn’t result in touchdowns. Still, it’s difficult to be dissatisfied with what New England obtained with their third-overall pick in April.Maye went on to discuss how his confidence has grown since his first practice appearances in the league, saying that it’s a quality that tends to develop every time he takes the field. Maye and the Patriots will have one last opportunity to make a big impression in the preseason on Sunday, August 25th when they play the Washington Commanders. It’s likely that this game will reveal more emerging traits for New England’s highly anticipated rookie quarterback.
