On Wednesday, September 4, the Indiana Fever were full of joy even before they won their fifth consecutive game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, defeating the Los Angeles Sparks in a tough match. This was due to Christie Sides being named the August WNBA Coach of the Month, an honour that she had won for the first time in the Fever franchise’s history, incidentally.
During their morning shootaround, the team surprised Sides by announcing her amazing achievement. To commemorate the historic event, they even offered her a cake.
But as it happens, Caitlin Clark—who also won Player of the Month—had some less than honourable motives about the aforementioned cake.
The microphones caught Clark jokingly asking that the cake be smashed in her coach’s face while the entire squad was celebrating Sides’ new award.
The three-second video above doesn’t show Clark, but you can definitely hear her say, “Smash the cake in her face.”
The full video, which the Fever shared on X (previously Twitter), is shown here. In any case, it doesn’t appear that anyone paid attention to Clark’s directions. That or they all just made the decision to disregard it altogether. Sides is lucky that the cake did not end up smashing in her face. After the Fever defeated the Sparks at home thanks to yet another incredible performance by Clark, the party went on. The young star scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists in the victory, recording her second triple-double of the year.
After taking a few days off, Clark and company head back to work on Friday, September 5. When they host the third-seeded Minnesota Lynx, they will want to continue their winning streak.
