In a recent interview, WNBA icon Sue Bird discussed her views on the Rookie of the Year award, which has been focused on a contest between Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese. Sue Bird is host of the “A Touch More” podcast.
Clark was just named the WNBA Rookie of the Month, the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, and the Eastern Conference Player of the Month.
Clark was averaging 24.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game in August during that time.
Sue Bird thinks that her recent play at the highest level has contributed to her rating as the top WNBA rookie.
“I personally, ever since All-Star break, have felt that Caitlin [Clark] is the Rookie of the Year,” Bird remarked.
The official social media administrator for the Indiana Fever on X then addressed Bird’s statement, emphasising the importance of what she had to say.
“Our Rookie of the Year,” Indiana Fever posted.
At the moment, Clark’s averages per game are 18.9 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.8 rebounds. She tops the WNBA in average assists and leads all rookies in average points.
With an average of 13.3 points and 13.2 rebounds per game, Angel Reese has been her toughest rival for Rookie of the Year. Reese leads the WNBA in average rebounds and is the only rookie averaging a double-double.
Reese has been playing fantastically, but the Chicago Sky have lost seven straight games, which is the worst losing skid in the WNBA.
Conversely, Indiana is thriving thanks to Clark’s ability to score and create plays. With eight wins in their previous ten games and five straight victories, they are the hottest club in the league.
Sue Bird believes that the most recent by Caitlin Clark and the Fever has helped put her over the edge to be crowned the WNBA Rookie of the Year award, and Indiana fully agrees with Bird’s statement.
