Josh Allen took over and led the Bills to their first division title in 25 years after Tom Brady left the Patriots after the 2019 season, after the team had dominated the AFC East for 20 years. Since then, Buffalo has finished in the top four of the conference’s playoff seeds for four consecutive years.
Even though the Bills didn’t make it past the first round in 2020—they were defeated in the AFC Championship Game by the Chiefs, who went on to win the Super Bowl—Allen has established himself as one of the greatest passers in the game during the past few seasons.
Fortunately for Buffalo, their franchise quarterback hasn’t had many injury setbacks during his NFL tenure. With 99 games started, including postseason games, Allen now holds the record for the longest quarterback start streak. He hasn’t missed a game since the middle of his first campaign in 2018.
If Allen performs like he has in the past, the only members of the Bills Mafia who will not profit from this upward trend are his backups, who probably won’t see much action this season. Take a look at Buffalo’s quarterback depth chart, which includes information on Mitchell Trubisky’s return and his role as Allen’s secondary.
**Bills Quarterback Depth Chart**
1. **Josh Allen**
Since 2020, Josh Allen has consistently ranked among the top 10 passers in the NFL, surpassing 4,200 passing yards each season. In the previous year, he recorded a 66.5% completion rate, with 29 touchdowns and 18 interceptions—the highest total of his career in a single season. Despite this, the Bills secured the No. 2 seed in the AFC and convincingly defeated the Steelers in the Wild Card Round, though they were ultimately eliminated by the Chiefs in the Divisional Round.
In his 2024 season debut against the Cardinals, Allen performed exceptionally well, completing 18 of 23 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns, earning a rating of 137.7 in Week 1. However, the Bills are currently missing their top two receivers from last season, Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis, who have joined the Texans and Jaguars, respectively. To replicate the team’s success over the past four years, Allen will need to build rapport with third-year wideout Khalil Shakir, promising rookie Keon Coleman, and offseason additions Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins.
2. **Mitchell Trubisky**
After spending two seasons with the Steelers, Mitch Trubisky returns to the Bills, where he previously played in 2021. In March, he signed a two-year contract with Buffalo worth $5.25 million, establishing himself as the sole backup to Allen on the official roster.
Trubisky began the 2022 season as the starter for Pittsburgh, ahead of rookie Kenny Pickett, but was benched in Week 4, later starting one more game due to an injury to Pickett. Over five starts, he totaled more than 1,200 passing yards, achieving a 65% completion rate, with four touchdowns and five interceptions.
In 2023, Trubisky remained a backup, stepping up as Pittsburgh’s starter in Weeks 14 and 15 when Pickett was injured, but lost both games and was subsequently replaced by Mason Rudolph. Despite signing a two-year extension with the Steelers prior to the season, Trubisky was released in February 2024 and then joined the Bills shortly after.
3. **Mike White**
The Bills added Mike White to their practice squad in late August, making it his third team in six seasons. Drafted by the Cowboys in the fifth round in 2018, the same year Allen was selected by the Bills, White has primarily served as a backup or practice squad player throughout his career.
In his first three seasons, White did not see any playing time after being waived by Dallas and signing with the Jets’ practice squad. His opportunity came in 2021 when Zach Wilson was injured during a Week 7 game against the Patriots, allowing White to take over.
During his two seasons with New York, White started seven games and played in eight, accumulating just over 2,000 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. After enduring five broken ribs in his final game with the Jets in January 2023, he signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins but was released after appearing in only one game during the 2024 preseason.
