Montreal Canadiens fans are expressing their frustration with Ivan Demidov’s KHL coach following the announcement of his new role with the SKA St. Petersburg team.
As the Canadiens prepare for the upcoming season, they have elevated expectations typical of a rebuilding team. Despite Patrik Laine’s injury, the organization is eager to showcase their capabilities to the rest of the League.
With Martin St-Louis at the helm, captain Nick Suzuki, first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky, Cole Caufield, Kirby Dach, and others are creating an exciting team dynamic in Montreal. The influx of talented players has fostered a positive environment, which is crucial for any successful franchise. Fans are particularly interested in rookie Lane Hutson, a strong Calder Trophy contender, who is generating buzz in Montreal and beyond.
Yet, the player fans are most excited to see is Ivan Demidov.
Chosen 5th overall by the Canadiens in the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas, Demidov has the potential to become an NHL superstar. Currently playing for SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL, he has performed well despite limited ice time, being recognized as rookie of the month.
However, players like Demidov face a harsh reality in the KHL, where many Russian teams do not prioritize player development. Ideally, he would be a regular in the top six, but he has found himself outside the first four lines and is listed as the 13th forward.
This situation has left many Canadiens fans concerned about his progress, with some urging the organization to bring him to Montreal no matter the cost. Not only are fans supporting this view, but Demidov has also liked an Instagram comment suggesting he should leave the KHL for North America.
Former KHL and NHL coach Bob Hartley has noted that SKA has 34 forwards, leading to frequent lineup changes to keep players satisfied. However, it doesn’t seem logical to bench the team’s most talented players.
While it’s clear that Demidov would excel in Montreal, facing such challenges could ultimately prove beneficial for his growth as a player.
We will continue to monitor his situation in Russia and provide updates on any developments.
