Following their loss to the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly put a player on the trade market.
The team is said to be considering a trade involving young defenseman Timothy Liljegren. Selected as the 17th overall pick in the 2017 draft, the 25-year-old right-handed defenseman is 6 feet 1 inch tall. Last season, he recorded a respectable 23 points in 55 games and has accumulated 65 points across 196 games in his NHL career.
However, Liljegren seems to have fallen out of favor with the Leafs, despite recently signing a new two-year contract worth three million dollars per year. His drop in the depth chart has been evident, as he was not in the lineup for the season opener against the Canadiens, mirroring a similar situation during the last NHL playoffs against the Boston Bruins.
According to Elliotte Friedman, Toronto is actively seeking a trade for Liljegren, who has become a lower-tier player in the lineup, a circumstance that is frustrating for all parties involved. With the additions of Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Jani Hakanpaa, Liljegren appears to have been overshadowed on the team’s defensive roster.
