For the first time in his career, Samuel Montembeault will begin the season as the top goaltender. With Cayden Primeau serving as his backup, the Quebec native has a chance to demonstrate his ability to lead an NHL team.
Although both goaltenders performed well during training camp, many remain skeptical about the sustainability of this duo for the season ahead.
NHL insiders express doubts about Montembeault and Primeau. Darren Dreger recently mentioned on TSN 690 that several of his peers in the league are unsure if these two can effectively handle the workload, with some suggesting that Kent Hughes should consider making a change.
However, Dreger himself is less concerned, believing that the goaltending situation will not pose a major issue for the team. While there are some uncertainties, he feels they might not be as severe as others suggest.
Montembeault, in particular, has much to prove; he must show that he can secure important victories and guide his team into the playoffs to establish his identity as a goaltender.
Dreger thinks there are no indications to doubt Montembeault’s capabilities as the Canadiens’ starting goalie, so there’s little reason for alarm at this point. Additionally, the team has gained another year of experience, and the defense is expected to improve. It will ultimately be up to Montembeault to maintain his starting position without succumbing to pressure, though many anticipate that Primeau may step into the number one role sooner rather than later this season.
