The unexpected Calgary Flames will aim to maintain their perfect start as they face off against Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.
So far, the Flames have kicked off their season with three consecutive victories, with their latest win occurring Sunday against their provincial and divisional rivals, the Edmonton Oilers. Last year, they did not achieve three straight wins until mid-December.
“It’s crucial to start off strong,” said forward Jonathan Huberdeau. “We put ourselves in a tough position last year, so getting some early wins and feeling good about ourselves is essential.”
Calgary’s success can be attributed to the performances of Huberdeau along with his linemates Anthony Mantha and Martin Pospisil. Huberdeau leads the team with five points (three goals and two assists) and is currently the top goal scorer. Pospisil has also accumulated five points (one goal, four assists), while Mantha has four points (two goals, two assists).
“What makes our line effective is that we each contribute different strengths that complement one another,” Mantha explained. “Huby is one of the best passers out there, and Pospy’s work ethic is incredible. That creates space for everyone else on the ice.”
Huberdeau is looking to improve after experiencing a significant decline in performance over his first two seasons with the Flames, following a career-best 115 points (30 goals, leading the NHL with 85 assists) during the 2021-22 season with the Florida Panthers. In his debut season with Calgary, he recorded 55 points (15 goals, 40 assists) and 52 points (12 goals, 40 assists) last season. “You build on this start,” said Huberdeau after scoring two goals and providing two assists in Saturday’s victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. “Nights like this boost confidence, and I aim to keep progressing.”
The Blackhawks head into Calgary after securing their first win of the season on Saturday against the Oilers, winning 5-2. This victory followed a narrow 2-1 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets, marking a resurgence after their season opener setback.
“After our disappointing season last year, we came into this year determined to improve,” Bedard commented. “Many people doubted the Flames at the start, but they’ve responded well. It’s just three games, so it’s not overly significant, but I’m sure they’re motivated for every game, just like we are.”
Bedard contributed a goal and two assists in the victory over Edmonton, totaling five points (one goal, four assists) and sharing the team lead with Teuvo Teravainen, who had four points (two goals, two assists) against the Oilers.
Following two seasons of finishing near the bottom of the NHL standings, the Blackhawks bolstered their roster with added depth and experience over the summer as they aim to make progress.
“We’re capable of frustrating teams and being a nuisance to play against,” Bedard stated. “That will define our identity: a focus on simplicity while possessing the skill to capitalize on opportunities.”
