The Montreal Canadiens surprised many by placing forward Alex Barre-Boulet on waivers with plans to send him to the Laval Rocket. Luckily for the team, he went unclaimed and was able to join the AHL squad. With his experience, he is expected to assist Laval’s young team in their playoff pursuits.
The 27-year-old appeared noticeably disappointed. When approached by reporters in the Rocket’s locker room, he expressed that he views himself as an NHL player, not one suited for the AHL.
“I probably knew I wouldn’t be claimed. I was keeping an eye on it […] I would have liked to get another chance in the NHL, but now I’m here, and I’ll do everything I can to get back with the Canadiens,” said Barre-Boulet.
Being a seasoned player who has faced multiple demotions to the AHL, Barre-Boulet understands the dynamics well. He plans to be a supportive teammate while demonstrating his NHL-worthy skills to the team’s management.
Despite the season just beginning, he recognizes the reality of the situation. “Up top, they have young guys who need to play and gain experience, and I understand the decision… I was disappointed, but I understood,” he noted.
Rocket head coach Pascal Vincent praised Barre-Boulet’s attitude, stating, “His goal is to return to the Canadiens and not give them a choice but to call him back. He understands the situation, and so far, I’m impressed.”
Barre-Boulet is set to take on significant responsibilities with the Rocket, playing alongside Brandon Gignac and Joshua Roy. It will be interesting to see his performance in the home opener against the Syracuse Crunch, his previous team.
Last season, Kent Hughes made a similar move with Joel Armia, suggesting that if Barre-Boulet excels, another decision regarding his status might be forthcoming.
