Artemi Panarin continued his impressive performance by netting a hat trick and contributing four points as the visiting New York Rangers triumphed 5-2 over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.
Panarin tallied two goals in the first period and followed up with a second power-play goal in the second period, bringing his total to five goals in the Rangers’ opening four games. After achieving a career-high 120 points last season, just three short of Jaromir Jagr’s franchise record, Panarin has already accumulated 11 points this season. This match marked his eighth career hat trick and made him the first player in team history to begin a season with four consecutive multi-point games. Since joining the Rangers in July 2019, this was his fifth hat trick and the team’s first against the Red Wings since Darren Turcotte did so on March 30, 1991.
Vincent Trocheck assisted on all of Panarin’s goals and also scored the second of the Rangers’ three power-play goals. Rookie Victor Mancini scored his first career goal, while Adam Fox provided three assists, helping the Rangers to a solid 3-0-1 record with a total of 20 goals so far.
In his season debut, New York’s backup goalie Jonathan Quick recorded 29 saves, achieving his 394th career win.
For the Red Wings, Moritz Seider and J.T. Compher found the net, but the team fell to 1-3 at the beginning of the season, having conceded 15 goals in their losses.
Detroit’s Cam Talbot gave up five goals on 19 shots and was replaced after Panarin scored his third goal. Alex Lyon came in to make 15 saves.
Panarin ignited his remarkable night with a goal 8:30 into the game, firing a shot over Talbot after receiving a long pass from Trocheck, who found the defenseman Ben Chiarot slow to react. Panarin then scored just nine seconds into the Rangers’ first power play with a shot from the left circle that went past Talbot’s right arm following Trocheck’s faceoff victory against Dylan Larkin.
After Seider’s goal 87 seconds into the second period, Trocheck and Panarin scored back-to-back power-play goals in just 2:56. Trocheck redirected a shot from Panarin to make it 3-1, and Panarin later scored again by moving into the right circle and placing the puck into the open side of the net.
