The New York Rangers have had an impressive beginning to the 2024-25 NHL season, achieving a 3-0-1 record over their first four games, thanks in part to notable performances from key players such as Artemi Panarin, Adam Fox, and Chris Kreider.
Meanwhile, the future of goaltender Igor Shesterkin has become a compelling topic after he reportedly rejected an $88 million contract extension that would have made him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history.
As speculation mounts, there are questions about what offer Shesterkin might ultimately accept and whether he could enter free agency next summer as the most sought-after goaltender in recent times. NHL Insider and former Rangers goalie Kevin Weekes believes Shesterkin will still become the highest-paid goalie ever, although the average annual value (AAV) may be capped at a specific level, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
“Ultimately, he will be the highest-paid goalie in league history, and he truly deserves that given the timing,” Weekes stated on NHL Network. He added that the proposed $88 million, eight-year deal at $11 million per year would surpass Carey Price’s previous record of $10.5 million.
Shesterkin, recognized as one of the best goaltenders in the sport, won the Vezina Trophy for the 2021-22 season and was a finalist for the Hart Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player.
Weekes further noted that while Shesterkin could aim for a $12 million or even a $12.5 million contract, such demands might not be beneficial for the team’s salary cap. However, he emphasized that it’s not Shesterkin’s responsibility to consider the team’s financial situation, highlighting the need for strong teammates if they hope to succeed.
The Rangers are slated to face the Maple Leafs next on Saturday night. Currently, Carey Price remains the highest-paid NHL goaltender, but his career has been significantly stalled by a persistent meniscus injury, sidelining him since the Canadiens’ unexpected run to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final.
Weekes believes there are no barriers preventing Shesterkin from eventually securing the highest contract ever for a goaltender in the NHL.
To date, Shesterkin holds a career record of 137-59-18 and boasts a 2.43 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage, and 16 shutouts.
