The Detroit Red Wings have summoned their top prospect, Marco Kasper, and instructed him to prepare for a two-day road trip to Nashville and New York. However, the team’s fans would rather see him settle down in the Detroit area.
Coach Derek Lalonde explained that Kasper was promoted due to Tyler Motte’s day-to-day upper body injury and Andrew Copp’s ongoing illness. While his stay may seem temporary, it could extend beyond just one game. “It’s a significant role,” Lalonde commented, indicating that Kasper will be placed in the team’s top nine and involved in both special teams. He acknowledged the challenge of developing players in the NHL while recognizing Kasper’s potential contribution. The coach noted that they had space for more forwards on the roster and hinted at the possibility of having a deeper lineup.
Fans have been eager for the Austrian center to make the team from training camp, appreciating his energetic and gritty style of play. Although he hasn’t yet established himself as a premier scorer, there is optimism that he could evolve into a solid No. 2 center.
Lalonde highlighted Kasper’s noticeable presence in practice, praising his skating and competitive spirit.
Kasper was having breakfast when he learned he needed to rush to Detroit for practice. He recounted, “Just finished eating breakfast, packed up my stuff, grabbed my bag, got to the rink, drove straight here.”
Lalonde remarked on Kasper’s ability to complement teammates by forechecking, retrieving pucks, and going to the net, emphasizing their intention to set him up for success. He noted the effectiveness of a combination with Berggren, who has been generating scoring chances, and hinted at the potential for Kasper to play on the wing with different players to create energy.
Kasper feels confident after his preseason performance, stating, “I think I was stronger, had the strength to move my feet, make things happen, play responsibly with the puck. Just trying to do my best to help the team win.”
As much as fans are curious about how Kasper can secure his spot in the NHL, Lalonde has his own expectations. He emphasized the importance of Kasper playing within his limits and not overextending himself, as he did early last year. He encouraged Kasper to manage his game, avoid turnovers, and maintain his energetic play while being cautious in evaluating his performance, as this will be only his second NHL game. Lalonde believes that if Kasper plays with energy and authenticity, he will be a valuable asset for the team.
