This summer, the New York Rangers signed Kaapo Kakko to a one-year deal, which did little to dampen the trade speculation surrounding him during the offseason. Nevertheless, it indicates that the team still believes the former second-overall pick contributes more to their success than trading him would.
Kakko’s window to prove his value may be closing, as the Rangers are eager to win a Stanley Cup in the near future. Once viewed as a potential cornerstone for the franchise, he has significantly underperformed, although injuries have played a role in his struggles. Kakko understands the need to elevate his game this season. “I know it,” he stated. “I’m no longer a young guy. It’s been a long time here. I feel like I’ve always been a third-line guy and still am on the third line. I just need to play as well as I can and not overthink it.”
Despite his comments, Kakko is still quite young at 23 and has played parts of six NHL seasons already. To remain a key figure in the Rangers’ future, he must perform well this season. He has enjoyed some early success, playing right wing on the third line with Filip Chytil and Will Cuylle. While he has not yet scored, he has tallied two assists over four games, including one in New York’s 5-2 victory against the Detroit Red Wings.
These statistics are modest, but they mark an encouraging beginning after a challenging 2023-24 season, where Kakko recorded 13 goals and 19 points. His post-season was even less impressive, contributing just one goal and two points in 15 playoff games.
“That gives you confidence,” Kakko remarked about his start to the 2024-25 season. “At some point, you have to score a goal, and things will improve, but at this time of year, it feels good to get those chances, even if it’s just a couple of games in.”
Kakko has the opportunity to establish himself not just as an NHL forward but as a vital part of the Rangers. It will be intriguing to observe his development throughout the 2024-25 season as the Rangers prepare for their next game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
