The Detroit Red Wings have started the season with a disappointing 1-3-0 record, placing them last in the Atlantic Division. While it’s still early in the season, there are mounting worries in Detroit.
Patrick Kane is yet to score this year, with only one assist to his name. Vladimir Tarasenko has similarly struggled, contributing just one point in four games. In a surprising move, starting goaltender Ville Husso was waived after allowing four goals on 14 shots in the opening game. Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot are currently sharing goaltending duties. Although Lyon is winless, he boasts a commendable .929 save percentage. Conversely, Talbot has struggled with inconsistency, being pulled in a recent game against the New York Rangers after conceding five goals on 19 shots.
In a recent episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli examined the issues facing the Red Wings, highlighting some potential concerns.
Yaremchuk began by discussing the team’s recent defeat to the New York Rangers, marking their second consecutive loss, this time by a score of 5-2. He noted that the Red Wings have experienced some bad luck, allowing the fifth-most shots at even strength and suffering from poor goaltending performances, especially from Husso. Given their current 1-3 record, he questioned whether these issues warrant concern or if it’s simply a matter of losing to a strong Rangers team.
Seravalli expressed significant concern, pointing to issues with their defensive play and goaltending rather than just goal-scoring. He stated that he doesn’t believe the Red Wings’ defense is of playoff caliber and feels their goaltending has serious shortcomings. He remarked on Talbot being replaced after a poor performance and highlighted the team’s struggles to find consistent goaltending solutions, indicating that there is no quick fix in sight.
Adding a potential bright spot, he mentioned the recall of first-round pick Marco Kasper under emergency conditions, noting that head coach Derek Lalonde indicated it could lead to a longer-term stay. However, he suggested that the phrase “emergency conditions” reflects the team’s overall troubles rather than just roster issues, concluding that the Red Wings seem to be stuck in a rut with no clear path to improvement.
