The ongoing contract situation involving New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin has introduced an intriguing narrative to the team’s season, amid a flood of speculation and reports. After the Rangers’ victory over Detroit on October 14, Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde commended Shesterkin’s performance while referring to the rejected contract offer prior to the regular season. Following another strong showing against the Maple Leafs in Toronto, two additional opponents acknowledged Shesterkin’s skills, enhancing his negotiating position. For context, the Rangers defeated the Leafs 4–1, with Shesterkin making 34 saves out of 35 shots and only conceding a goal to team captain Auston Matthews. Despite several opportunities for Toronto to score, they managed to beat Shesterkin just once. Matthews remarked, “Very composed… He’s not the biggest guy, but he’s very athletic and seems to come up with big saves when his team needs it. Obviously a lot of respect for him.” Anthony Stolarz, the goalie for the opposing team, also lauded Shesterkin post-match, saying, “You can see why he’s going to be the highest-paid goalie in the league.” Although reports indicate that Shesterkin declined an $88 million offer, he continues to perform impressively, strengthening his argument for potentially becoming the highest-paid goalie of all time and the highest annual salary among Rangers players. However, according to the latest information from Weekes, it seems challenging for Shesterkin to achieve a $12 million annual salary. “I think ultimately this gets resolved with a number with an 11 on it,” Weekes stated. “That’s my thought. I don’t think it goes to 12. Yeah, I don’t think it goes to 12. Could be wrong.”
