The New York Rangers are off to a strong start in the 2024-25 NHL season, winning four out of their first five games while earning points in each match. In preparation for their Original Six matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night, the team has made a significant lineup change by including the imposing forward Matt Rempe, who will be playing his second game of the season.
Head coach Peter Laviolette highlights that while Rempe’s physicality may be his standout trait, his contributions extend beyond just toughness, as reported by the Toronto Sun. “Matt offers more than just grit,” Laviolette stated following the team’s morning skate at Scotiabank Arena. “He has a strong physical presence, plays aggressively near the net, and while he can fight if needed, his game encompasses much more than that.
“As a young player, it’s essential that we nurture his development in both practice and game situations, allowing him the chance to compete at a higher level. He’s a promising young talent.”
Laviolette also noted that the role of a physical player has evolved over time, especially compared to when he started coaching. “The heavyweight role has certainly transformed,” he remarked. “Looking back to when I began coaching in 2000, the rules were vastly different. Today’s players must bring more than just fighting skills; they need to be ready to contribute in all aspects of the game. He’s had a productive summer, focusing on improving his skating and overall abilities, and he’s determined to make a significant impact each game to secure a regular place in the lineup.”
At 22 years old, Rempe stands at an impressive 6’8″ and weighs 240 pounds. He was picked 165th overall by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut last season.
He played in 17 games, recording one goal and an assist, along with 71 penalty minutes, and scored a goal in 11 playoff games.
