The New York Rangers have started the season strong with a record of 5-0-1, receiving contributions from across their lineup. All four lines are performing effectively, and after struggling with production from right-wingers last season, Reilly Smith—acquired via trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins—has made a significant impact. He has notably improved the position compared to Blake Wheeler, who played right wing for the team in 2023-24.
### Smith’s Performance This Season
One of the standout qualities of Smith is his speed, which enhances his ability to forecheck and swiftly transition from defense to offense. He plays alongside Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad, creating a line of fast skaters. Smith is also utilized on the penalty kill, where his speed benefits the team’s efforts to intercept passes and block shots. The Rangers have successfully killed 86.4 percent of penalties this season, an improvement from 84.5 percent last season, ranking third in the NHL. Additionally, Smith is part of the second power-play unit, which has seen increased activity this year and has converted 31.6 percent of their opportunities, up from 26.4 percent last season.
In the season opener on Oct. 9, Smith assisted on a Kreider goal in the Rangers’ 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. He scored his first goal as a Ranger with a quick wrist shot in a 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 14 after a faceoff win by Zibanejad. Smith added two assists in a later 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs and scored another goal against the Montreal Canadiens in a 7-2 win on Oct. 22, bringing his totals to two goals and four assists with a plus-5 rating in six games.
### Impact of Smith’s Addition for the Rangers
Smith’s presence has already enhanced his line with Zibanejad and Kreider, alleviating some pressure on his teammates. Together, they’ve scored five even-strength goals, excluding empty-netters, and are generating more scoring chances than last year when Wheeler was on the line. The trio appears to be quickly developing chemistry.
Defensively, Smith boosts the line’s effectiveness. Zibanejad and Kreider excel defensively, and Smith helps them contend against opponents’ top offensive players, contributing positively even when they aren’t scoring themselves.
Smith also strengthens the special teams unit, particularly on the penalty kill, where he partners with Vincent Trocheck. The Rangers, despite having waived Barclay Goodrow—who was picked up by the San Jose Sharks—have many forwards adept at penalty killing. Smith brings considerable power-play experience, having recorded eight points with the Penguins and ten points with the Vegas Golden Knights in previous seasons.
The Rangers enter this season with high expectations after winning the Presidents’ Trophy and reaching the Eastern Conference Final. Smith adds valuable playoff experience to the roster, with 26 goals and 53 assists in 106 career postseason games, including four goals and ten assists in 22 games during the 2022-23 playoffs, where he helped the Golden Knights secure the Stanley Cup.
### Looking Ahead for Smith
Smith is excelling in every aspect of the game and has significantly contributed to the Rangers’ strong start this season. His arrival has addressed the team’s need for a stronger right winger, and he has certainly lived up to expectations in the first six games. Moving forward, it is essential for Smith to maintain this high level of play and consistency throughout the season.
